Abstract

A composition for waterproofing masonry consists essentially of a water-soluble siliconate dissolved in a water phase which also contains a dispersion or emulsion of rubber latex. The siliconate may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a silanol, e.g. R2Si(OH)2 or RSi(OH)3, o the corresponding siloxanol, in which each R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alicyclic, aryl, alkaryl or halogenated hydrocarbon radical. The latex may be one of a natural, prevulcanized or synthetic rubber. The compositions may be (a) applied to the surface of a wall or floor where it is desired to prevent penetration of liquid water and watervapour, (b) injected into masonry through a series of holes to form an effective damp-proof course at the sites of injection, or (c) incorporated in cement mixes suitable for rendering on damp walls or below ground level or on damp flooring. In Examples (1) a composition for injection into holes drilled in a mortar layer consists of 8 pts. (by wt.) of an aqueous solution of the mono-sodium salt of methyl silane triol (40% solids), 80 pts. of water and 12 pts. of a natural latex (60% solids) ; (2) a composition for surface application as a paint consists of 10 pts. of the siliconate of (1), 75 pts. of water, 10 pts. of a prevulcanized latex and 5 pts. of aluminous cement ; and (3) a composition for application as a screed or rendering to damp walls or floors or to roofs, consists of 5 pts. of the siliconate of (1), 30 pts. of water, 15 pts. of latex, 15 pts. of aluminous cement and 35 pts. of washed sand. Hardeners or hardening accelerators for the cement may be added to the compositions as used in (3).
