Abstract

848,007. Type-printing telegraphy. SIEMAG FEINMECHANISCHE WERKE G.m.b.H. Oct. 24, 1956 [Oct. 24, 1955], No. 32355/56. Class 40(3). In an arrangement for perforating a tape in accordance with the 5-unit code by means of a keyboard, generally similiar to that of a typewriter, having a shift key for the typing of capital letters and certain upper-case signs or symbols, but also having "Letters" and "Figures" Keys to derive the signals to provide a printing distinction or control for those different characters which have the same 5-unit code combination, a number of change-over switches, one for each of the five code elements, permit the letter keys to produce the appropriate code combinations independently of the position of the shift key, and two switches in series, one closed by the depression of the "Figures" key and re-opened by actuation of the "Letters" key and the other closed by the movement of the shift key to the upper-case position, operate when both are closed, to move all the change-over switches into the circuit of respective relays selectively operated and controlling switch chains which produce the signal combinations corresponding to the upper-case characters or signs of the keys allocated to, or carrying, two signs or characters. In the arrangement shown, with the keyboard in the "Letters" condition and contact 16 open, the appropriate combination for a letter is sent, independently of the position of contact 17, closed by the shift key, by the selective operation of switch members 6-10 and connection over leads 11-15 and change-over switches 191- 195 to conductors 1-5 connected to the magnets of a perforator (not shown). In the case of keys carrying two characters the code combination for the lower character is produced by operation of the key after the "Figures" key has been actuated. To obtain the signal for the upper character, the shift key is also operated closing contacts 16, 17 in series and actuating relay 19 closing contacts 191-195 so that the selective closing of contacts 6-10 by the operation of the character key energizes corresponding relays 21-25 having contacts 21(1)-21(5), 22(1)-22(3), 23(1)-23(3), 24(1)-24(5) and 25(1)-25(3) which form appropriate chain paths from voltage connecting points 31-35 to the corresponding conductors 1-5. For example, the numeral 6, which has similiar elements 1, 3, 5-say marking i.e. MSMSM,-is the figures-case character of the letter Y. To provide the code combination of the corresponding shift character, viz. the sign, carried by the same key, contacts 16, 17 are both closed, relay 19 operated, and relays 21, 23 and 25 are actuated. Paths to conductors 1, 2, 3, 4 for the appropriate combination can be traced from 31 21(1)(a), 22(1), 24(1); 32, 21(2)(a) 23(1)(a); 33, 21(3)(a), 23(2)(a), 24(2) 25(1)(a) and 34, 23(4)(a) 21(4)(a), 22(2), 25(2)(a) producing the code combination with the first four elements similar, say MMMMS, designating the sign following the Figures signal. The appendix (a) indicates an actuated contact of the associated energized relay. The operation of the shift key after operation of the "Figures" key locks against operation those keys which in their upper case carry characters or signs not represented by code combinations in the International Teleprinter Alphabet.
