Abstract
847,937. Thermally actuated valves. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. Dec. 3, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1956], No. 36940/56. Class 135. A valve device for controlling the gas supply to the top burners of a gas cooker, comprises a casing 10 having an inlet 12 and outlets 14, 23 to main and pilot burners respectively, a rotary conical shut-off cock 30 controlling the inlet, a valve plate 74 manually adjustable to adjust the gas supply to the main burner in accordance with the size of the vessel being heated and the material from which it is made and a thermostatically controlled valve 136 whose position is adjusted independently of the adjustment of the valve plate 74. The cock 30 is locked in its " off " position. To open the cock 30 a knob 24 is depressed whence a sleeve 50 carried thereby moves a locking plate 62 against a spring 64 so that a radially projecting lug 70 on the plate 62 is disengaged from a cam surface (not shown) in a recess 52 in the casing cover 44 and lugs 66 co-operate with slots 68 in the valve stem 40 to permit the rotation of the cock up to a position limited by a stop 75. An annular groove 60 in the sleeve 50 and a spring ring 56 mounted in a groove in a sleeve 54 rigidly connected to the cock stem 40 limit the axial movement of the sleeve 50. An inner knob 102 having a screwthreaded shaft 98, on rotation, axially moves a stem 78 so that the valve plate 74 is adjustable relative to its seat 76 formed on the bottom of the cock 30. The stem 78 carries a screwthreaded collar 84 engageable in a recess 82 in the sleeve 54 so that on rotation of the knob 24 the stem 78 is rotated and with it the valve plate 74. Slots 122 in a tubular extension 116 of the valve plate 74 engage tangs 120 to rotate a shaft 118 slidably carrying the valve plate 136 and screw threads on the shaft 118 engage a non- rotatable thimble 128 to move the valve plate 136 relative to its seat 138 to set the operating temperature. A thermostat comprising a temperature-sensing element 104 in contact with the cooking vessel, a capsule 108 and a connecting tube 106 filled with liquid, on increase in temperature moves the valve plate 136 towards its seat against a spring 132. A bi-metallic disc 160 held between telescopic cup members 158, 148 fixed to the capsule 108 and abutting the thimble 128 respectively and loaded by a spring 146 compensates for variations in ambient temperature. A restricted orifice 77 in the valve plate 74 supplies gas to the pilot burner when the cock is in its open position and the valve plate 74 seated.
