Abstract
Polymers are made by polmerizing a conjugated diene containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms in aqueous emulsion at a temperature above 0 DEG C., in the presence of 5 to 20 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the polymerizable substance of a dihydric alcohol in which the hydroxy groups are attached to adjacent carbon atoms or a polymer thereof as a modifier. Specified confugated dienes are butadiene-1,3,pentadiene, hexadiene, dodecadiene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3 and 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3. Specified modifiers are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, pinacol, polyethylene glycols, copolymers of ethylene and propylene glycol, copolymers of polyesters and diacids and copolymers of a glycol with a dihydric alcohol which does not contain hydroxy groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms. Specified co-polymer forming monomers which may be present in the reaction mixture are styrene, p-chlorostyrene, a -methyl styrene and acrylic acid. Emulsifying agents specified are the alkali metal salts of fatty acids, resin acids and alkyl aryl sulphonates. Polymerization catalysts specified are peroxy compounds, e.g. potassium or ammonium persulphate or redox catalysts of which may are specified. In the examples, polymers are made from butadiene-1,3 or isoprene and styrene, 2-methyl styrene or acrylonitrile in the presence of modifiers selected from ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, polyethylene glycols or pinacol.
