Abstract
846,455. Hydraulic torque converters. GENE. RAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 20, 1959 [May 5, 1958], No. 9740/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic torque converter comprises an annular pump 20, Fig. 1, turbine 25 and stator 29 members, one of said members having a plurality of curved blades each of which has progressively smaller widths at each radius from the axis of the converter in planes perpendicular to the axis of the converter from outer to the inner shell, each width from the outer shell to the inner shell being located entirely within the perimeter of the preceding cross-section. The shape of the blades permits the core employed in casting the member having those blades to be cast in a mould and axially withdrawn, in one piece, for use in a further mould for casting the member. The angles of the blades of two converters are listed, one having a lower stall speed than the other. The turbine blades 12 have an inlet angle of + 53 degrees and an outlet angle of - 63 degrees, and in designing the shape of the blades, the inlet and outlet angle lines are drawn to intersect substantially mid-way between lines representing the leading and trailing edges of the blade and a mean camber line is drawn tangentially to successive lines drawn between equally spaced construction points on the inlet and outlet angle lines. The shape 122, Fig. 8, of the blade at the outer shell 26 of the turbine member is arranged about a line 115 perpendicular to the axis 114 of the converter, and the shape 123 of the blade at the inner shell 27 is arranged about a line 124 inclined from the line 115 so that the shape 123 is disposed within the perimeter of the shape 122. The width of the blade at any cross-section increases from the inner shell to the outer shell and each crosssection from the outer shell to the inner shell in planes perpendicular to the axis of the converter falls within the perimeter of the preceding crosssection. A plaster core may then be cast in a mould of the space between the blades and removed in one piece from the mould by a straight axial lift. The cone 45, Fig. 5, is then placed between a drag 76 and cope 77 of a mould and the casting material, such as aluminium, poured through a gate 92 to cast the complete turbine member including the inner and outer shells and the blades in one piece.
