Abstract

846,283. Making springs; altering physical structure. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. Jan. 4, 1957 [July 10, 1956], No. 447/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making an extended life coil spring from a bar of spring steel comprising a single heating of the bar to a temperature suitable for coiling and above its upper critical temperature, next coiling the bar and finally subjecting the coiled bar to shot peening is characterized in that, after the coiling and before the shot peening, the bar is quenched before it has cooled to a temperature below its lower critical temperature. The coiling temperature for carbon steel is approximately 1625‹ F. and alloy steels approximately 1575‹ F. During the coiling operation an electronic device automatically rejects any workpiece the temperature of which has fallen below the minimum quench temperature of 1450‹ F. Following the oil quench the springs are tempered within the range of 200‹ to 1000‹ F. and preferably at 800‹ F. and may be preset by setting them solid a plurality of times. Upon completion of the set-down operation or upon cooling from the tempering if the springs are not set-down, the springs are shot peened to extend their fatigue life.
