Abstract

846,014. Governors. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE GENERALE DE MECANIQUE APPLIQUEE S.I.G.M.A. March 7, 1957 [March 10, 1956; June 25, 1956], No. 7639/57. Class 57. A centrifugal governor for controlling the injection pump of a diesel engine comprises a driving disc 3, Fig. 1, and circular support 6 which are rotatable about a common axis and caused to slide relatively to each other in the direction of the axis as the result of the outward radial movement of centrifugal weights 4 carried on the support 6 such outward radial movement and rotation of the support 6 being effected by the rotation of the disc 3 through the intermediary of balls 7 disposed in cooperating recesses 8, 9 which are provided in the disc and weights and are shaped so that the balls have only a rolling displacement at least on the walls of the recesses 8 in the disc. The disc 3, which is fixed to the driving shaft 2 of the pump, has on its inner face the conical recesses 8 which have their faces disposed at oblique angles to the axis. The weights 4, Fig. 2, are in the form of segments guided on radial pins 5 extending from the support 6 and are each provided with one of the conical recesses 9 ; the included angle of the recesses 9 is slightly greater than that of the recesses 8 in order to ensure a rolling action between the ball and recesses. The relative longitudinal displacement of the disc 3 and support 6 may be used directly to actuate a pump-control rack 1 or such rack may be controlled by the longitudinal movement of a second disc 10 having recesses 13 cooperating with recesses 12 in the weights 4 for the reception of balls 11 ; if desired, the recesses 13 may be replaced by a continuous V-shaped groove. The connection of the disc 10 to the rack 1 is through the intermediary of a thrust bearing 19, sleeve 16 and rod 17. The longitudinal movement of the disc 10 is effected against the action of two springs 14, 15 disposed inside the sleeve 16, the loading of the springs being adjustable by the operator through a pivoted finger-and-stop arrangement 20, 20a, 22. In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the weights 4a are guided in slideways 26 in a ring 24 and are provided on each side with spherical recesses for the reception of balls 7a, 11a ; the recesses are of larger radius than the balls in order that there may be rolling contact between the balls on opposite sides of the weights. This arrangement may be further modified by replacing the spherical recesses by conical recesses each of which has as its generatrix either a curved line or, as shown in Fig. 7, two lines a, b disposed at an angle to each other. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 10, the driving disc may be formed as cylindrical pockets which have their axes disposed at an angle to the axis of the disc and open at 3b into one wall of the disc; the diameter of pockets 8a is preferably greater than that of the balls. In a further arrangement, the disc 10 may be axially fixed and the driving disc 3 axially movable and connected to the control rack 1.
