Abstract

845,879. Liquid fuel-burner igniters. CONTROLS A. G. Nov. 2, 1956 [Nov. 4, 1955], No. 33594/56. Class 75(3). A liquid fuel burner electrical ignition assembly comprises a heating element, a wick, and an element and wick housing and has walls shaped to form with the wick an initial combustion space adjacent the element whereby the heat from the element when energised, is sufficiently retained within the inital combustion space to ignite vaporized fuel within the initial combustion space. In the arrangement shown in Fig; 1 a pot burner 2 provided with a plurality of rows of air apertures 3 and fed with fuel from a pipe 5 is supported within a heater casing 1 and an ignition device 6 extends at an angle through the heater casing 1 into the burner pot 2 adjacent the burner pot bottom 4 above a sump 4a. The ignition device 6 comprises an outer cylindrical metal tube 7 within which is supported, on insulating members 16, 17, a pair of poles 14, 15 connected to a heating coil 18 disposed opposite a central opening 13 in a metal wick element 11. The wick element 11 is formed as a closely wound spiral coil of stainless steel, nickel chrome in similar material the convolutions of which are spaced to leave passages 12 for fuel vapour and are axially offset from one another. A shield 8 is fitted over the upper end of the tube 7 which tube 7 terminates above the level of the lowest air apertures 3. In a modification shown in Fig. 5, the ignition is supported in a tube 32 welded or otherwise attached to the burner pot 21 and formed with a fuel pipe 34. A shield 36 surrounds the upper end of the tube 32 and fits snugly in a sleeve 38 provided on the - heater casing 1. The upper end of the tube 32 is above the level of the lowest air apertures 3a. As shown in Fig. 8 an igniter shield 41 engages a support 42, similar to the previously mentioned support 32, through the intermediary of indents 41<SP>1</SP> to allow the passage of air between the support 42 and igniter tube 40 and air through apertures 47 in the tube 40. The metallic wich 46 comprises a number of superimposed layers of stainless steel screen wire which surround the heater element 45. In a further modification shown in Fig. 10 oil is sprayed through a nozzle 60 and passes downwardly through the space between the support tube 52 and the igniter tube 53. The shield 54 is provided with indentations 59 which engage the support tube 52. An end plate 59a is joined to the ignition tube 53, and is spaced from the shield 54 by indentations 59b.
