Abstract
A method of contacting gasiform material and finely divided solids in a fluidised bed of solids, such as a catalyst, in a contacting zone wherein solids entrainment with upflowing gasiform material is relatively high and more solids are removed from said bed than are introduced with the gasiform material, comprises separating entrained solids from the entraining gasiform material, passing the separated solids to a stripping zone, maintaining the level of solids in said stripping zone higher than the level of solids in said fluidised bed of solids in said contacting zone and returning solids from said stripping zone to said fluid bed in the contacting zone to maintain a desired level of solids in the fluid bed. In an example applied to the catalytic cracking of naphtha, kerosene, light or heavy <PICT:0845771/III/1> virgin gas oils, catalytic cycle gas oil, thermally cracked gas oil, deasphalted oil, solvent treated oil or reduced crude, the preheated oil is introduced into reaction vessel 10 through a line 12 and is admixed with catalyst from a regenerated catalyst stand pipe 14 having a control valve 16, and the mixture passes through a distribution grid 20 and into a short cylindrical member 22 which forms the reaction zone and is concentric with the main vessel 10. The velocity of the hydrocarbon vapours is such that catalyst is drawn over into stripping zone 24 and the vapours pass into cyclones 38 and 48 and then through outlet 56 to fractionating equipment. The level in the catalyst bed 30 is controlled by means of a differential pressure controller 72 which is operated in conjunction with pipes 74 and 76. Similarly the level of stripped catalyst 42 is controlled by controller 78 operating in conjunction with pipes 75 and 77, as a result of which slide valve 70 is appropriately adjusted.
