Abstract
A suspension of sodium montmorillonite is prepared by vigorously stirring sodium montmorillonite exhibiting a base exchange comprising of 97 milliequivalents per 100 g. into water and adjusting the solid content to 7 g. of clay solids per 100 millitres of suspension. Lithium montmorillonite is prepared by base exchange from sodium montmorillonite by passage of a suspension of the latter over an ion exchange resin column previously saturated with lithium ions. The solid content of the lithium montmorillonite suspension is adjusted to 7 g. of clay solids per 100 millilitre suspension after completion of the base exchange reaction by filtering off the requisite quantity of water from the suspension. The above suspension of sodium and lithium montmorillonites are thixotropic.
