[Also in Group XVII] A system for discharging tanks comprises a draw-off pipe 27, Fig. 3, and a deflector plate 28 rigidly attached below one or more outlets 25 associated with the pipe, the deflector plate 28 being above the bottom of the tank so that liquid moving towards the outlet in an upward direction is caused to travel over the periphery of the deflector plate. When the tank contains liquid hydrocarbons the deflector 28 prevents any water present from being drawn up into the ports 25, such water passing into a drain trough 22. A cowl 29 may be included to deflect any falling drops of water away from the deflector 28, and the deflector and cowl may be cut away to provide clearance for a filling pipe 31 and a dip stick 32 (not shown). In a modified form, Fig. 2, the tank floor 10 supports an annular wall 11 within which depends a suction pipe 12. To the wall 11 is secured an extension 13 having at its upper end a deflector plate 14, 15. In the tank floor, there is a drain cock 17 having inlets both inside and outside the wall 11.
