Abstract

845,059. Extrusion-centrifugal moulding machines. PATELLA, L. Aug. 11, 1958, No. 26692/58. Class 87(2). A process of moulding hollow articles of a thermoplastic material comprises extruding softened material 50 on to the inner surface of a cylindrical mould 32 so that the material lies in helical convolutions 51 whilst rotating the mould at a relatively low speed and heating it during the laying-down step to maintain the material in its softened condition, centrifuging the material in the mould at a high speed so that the convolutions 51 fuse together and then cooling the material to form a unitary body. Thermoplastic end pieces 33, 34 may be placed in the mould 32 so they fuse to the convolutions and the convolutions may be laid in more than one layer and of different materials. An axially movable tube 17 has a discharge orifice or orifices 20 through which plastic material is forced by a ram 23 into a mould 32 rotated on rollers 31. Two such tubes may discharge into the mould, one from either end. The tube 17 and ram 23 are mounted on a rotatable bracket 19 having an extrusion barrel 11 and distribution chamber 14. In operation the tube 17 is withdrawn until the orifice 20 is within the chamber 14 whereupon the pressure of the plastic material within the chamber 14 forces back the ram 23 and fills the tube 17, the volume contained by the tube 17 being adjustable by a ram stop 24. The tube 17 and ram 23 are then advanced in the mould 32 and differential withdrawal of the tube and ram extrudes the helical convolution 51. Rotation of the bracket 19 enables the tube 17 to discharge into a second mould whilst the material in the first mould is centrifuging.
