Abstract

844,742. Piezo-electric elements. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. June 25, 1956 [June 29, 1955], No. 18856/55. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XXIX] A crystal transducer for actuating a valve controlling the flow of a pressure fluid, comprises two slabs 45, Fig. 1, of 45 degrees cross-cut Rochelle, salt cemented together with a layer of silver foil 46 coated with graphite therebetween and coated on their outer surfaces 47 with foil. The whole is then dipped in a plastic material to seal and insulate it and mounted in a body space 12 in a valve housing with three corners clamped firmly together by pads 48, Fig. 2, and the fourth corner 49 free with a suitable mounting 50 for engaging a rod 51 located between valve closure elements 32. On an electrical signal being applied to the foil layers 46, 47 through terminals 52 the rod 51 is moved upwardly or downwardly according to the polarity of the signal to unseal one or other of the valve elements to control the supply and exhaust of pressure fluid to and from a single-acting, piston-and-cylinder actuator (see Group XXIX).
