In measuring-instruments having an indicating mark on a roller or on a band moving longitudinally behind an elongated window 13, the width of the window is changed abruptly at points requiring special emphasis. Special values are distinguished by cut-outs 21, Fig. 2, or by widening one or both sides of the window, Fig. 10, and small crenellations 20 on one or both sides may occur at the scale numerals. The indicating-mark may be a line 16<SP>1</SP> of a colour striking in contrast to that of the drum or band, which may tone with the window frame or the mark may be the border line 16 between two areas, the colour of one area 15 contrasting and of the other toning with the frame. Where the mark is a helical line on a drum, the cut-outs may slope, Fig. 5.
