Abstract

844,418. Electric branding irons. WHITLEY, H. H. Dec. 17, 1958 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1497/58. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XVI] A branding instrument for sheep, cattle and other animals comprises a body portion 10 which can be held in the hand, the body portion having an electric socket 13 and a manually operable switch 14 whereby the socket may be connected to a current supply, and an electric plug 18 adapted to be detachably mounted in the socket 13, the plug forming a branding head and comprising an electric resistance connected to the pins 19 thereof and which is in the form of the required brand. The body 10 may be formed of steel tube or may be die cast. The plug 18 comprises a metal plate 21 and two porcelain plates 20, 22, the resistance wire 24 passing through all the plates and having a part of its length disposed in a channel 23 on the outer face of the porcelain plate 22, which channel has the shape of the required brand. A number of interchangeable plugs 18 bearing different brands may be supplied for one body 10. The brand is heated by current from a 12-volt supply provided by a battery or transformer.
