844,016. Gating circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1958 [Aug. 23, 1957], No. 26919/58. Class 40(6). [Also in Group XIX] A switching circuit for selecting a transducer from a two dimensional matrix array of transducers includes normally cut-off transistors which may be selectively rendered conductive. As shown for a 2 x 2 matrix of transducer heads X 1 Y1 &c., past which a magnetic recording medium (not shown) is moving x-coordinate selection is determined by earthing one of lines 13, 14 normally at +20v which are connected to the bases of transistor pairs 11, 11<SP>1</SP>; 12, 12<SP>1</SP> respectively and y-coordinate selection is determined by earthing one of terminals 17, 18 normally at +20v which are connected to the bases of transistors 15, 16. Thus to select the transducer X 1 Y 2 , line 13 and terminal 18 are earthed. On a read operation, signals induced in the transducer x 1 y 2 pass through diodes 19, 20 and transducers 11, 11<SP>1</SP> to output lines 32, 31. On a write operation lines 39, 40 are high and low or low and high respectively, to control transistors 33, 34 which in turn control current flow through the lines 31, 32. Thus when line 40 is high and line 39 is low a circuit is completed from earth, transistor 34, line 32, transistor 11, line 21, diode 19, the upper portion of transducer X 1 Y 2 , transistor 16 to + 15v, causing current flow in one direction through the winding of transducer x 1 y 2 . When the line 40 is low and line 39 high, the opposite flow is induced in the transducer x 1 y 2 .
