Abstract
843,817. Electromagnetic transducers. CANADIAN WESTINGHOUSE CO. Ltd. Dec. 12, 1956 [Dec. 15, 1955], No. 2959/60. Divided out of 843,816. Class 40 (1). A transducer comprises two inductively coupled elements, one being a pair of separate coaxial helical conductors of the same radius and pitch having their turns alternating with one another, and the other being a helical conductor coaxial with the first and of the same pitch but of different radius. Preferably the second element also is a bifilar helix. In Fig. 2 the first element comprises a bifilar helix with connections at 6 and 8, the other ends being attached to one another at 7, and the second element is another bifilar helix with two separated windings 10-11 and 12-13. A.C. is supplied to the first element and induces in the two windings of the second element currents whose magnitudes will depend on the relative axial positions of the elements, and will also vary if the first element is rotated on its axis. Linear displacement can be measured by moving one element relative to the other and noting the number of maxima of current which occur in the second element. The fine position can be determined by rotating the first element until the current is a minimum and noting its angular movement. The transducer can also be used in the positioning system of Specification 843,816. The accuracy of the windings is improved by locating the wires in grooves on the elements. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the pick-up coil is a monofilar helix. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the bifilar helix of the pick-up coil is wound unsymmetrically, one winding being closer to the second winding on one side than the other; this gives a non-sinusoidal output with sharper nulls but it is not possible to use angular rotation of one element for fine measurements. Specification 604,382 also is referred to.
