Abstract

843,589. Tubeless tyres. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Nov. 28, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1958], No. 38415/58. Class 144 (2). A tubeless pneumatic tyre 10 has a flexible fabric reinforced air impervious partition wall member 25 secured at its side edges to the inner sidewalls of the tyre intermediate the beads 15 and the crown 11, the tyre being separately inflatable as desired on each side of the wall 25, as by inflation valves 19, 20 in the wheel rim 18 and tyre sidewall 12 respectively, so that in the event of a blowout when the tyre is inflated through valve 20, the wall 25 being accommodated in the rim well, Fig. 1, the tyre may be inflated through the valve 19 whereupon the wall 25 seats against the tyre crown, Fig. 2, to seal the puncture. The wall 25 is moulded with the tyre to follow the contour of the tyre crown and is secured to the tyre sidewalls in a manner ensuring a uniformly pleated collapsed condition when seated in the rim well, Fig. 4. As shown, the wall 25 comprises two cross-laid plies 26, 27 of rubberized nylon cord fabric having a cord angle of 30 to 45 degrees in the finished tyre. Adjacent marginal edges 26a, 27a of the plies 26, 27 are opened out about a junction line 28 and are bonded to the tyre sidewalls to extend in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 4. At circumferentially-spaced intervals along each junction 28, triangular areas 29 of the wall 25 are doubled on to the ply margin 27a and bonded thereto to induce pleats 31 which ensure uniform distribution of the wall 25 in the rim well. In construction, the wall 25 is plied up on a tyre building drum with the marginal edges 27a of the uppermost ply 27 doubled back on itself and stitched to itself at the triangular areas 29, the tyre then being built on to the wall 25 with the inner liner 17 adhered only to the margins 26a, 27a. In alternative constructions the margins 26a, 27a may be stitched together to provide only a single flop attachment to the tyre sidewall extending either towards or away from the tyre bead.
