Abstract

843,510. Determining physical dimensions. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Nov. 12, 1958 [Oct. 9, 1957], No. 31616/57. Class 37. Measuring apparatus comprises a probe axially movable by a motor and means for applying a voltage between the probe and the tested member to produce a spark, variations in the spark resistance being used to control the motor so as to maintain the length of gap constant and means to indicate the position of the probe. Fig. 1 shows a body 12, the contours of which are being determined.' The probe 10 is carried by a member 11 movable by means of a lead screw 13, driven by a two phase induction motor 18 via a gear train. The position of the probe and hence the dimensions of the body 12 is indicated by fine and coarse pointers 25, 28. Fig. 2 (not shown) relates to another arrangement contained in a cylindrical casing, in which the motor is mounted vertically. The fine and coarse pointers are replaced by two revolution counters, used respectively to indicate upward and downward movement relative to a datum, shutters being provided to obscure the counter not in use. Fig. 7 shows a motor control circuit, in which the resistance of the spark gap 17 is measured in a bridge circuit fed from winding 57 of a transformer. The bridge unbalance voltage is amplified by a phase splitter 80c and the tuned push-pull amplifier 65, 66 before being fed to the motor 18. Stabilizing feedback is provided by an alternating current tacho-generator 29 the output of which is amplified by valve 80d. In Fig. 4, (not shown) a long-tailed pair type of phase splitter is used. Fig. 3 (not shown) relates to the use of a long-tailed pair type of power amplifier. An alternative probe construction is shown in Fig. 5. The lead screw 13b is journalled in ball races 88 and turns a spindle 81 threaded into a sleeve 81a slidable within the housing 83. Backlash is prevented by a nut 86 and spring 87. A terminal 93 makes sliding contact with a rod 94 which carries the voltage from winding 57 via a resistor 68 to the platinum ball 97 forming the end of the probe. Reference is made to the use of the invention in place of a micrometer or for measuring moving objects such as cams.
