Abstract

843,503. Purifying gases; contacting gases with liquids. STAMICARBON N.V. May 14, 1957 [May 18, 1956], No. 15328/57. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Coke oven gas is dried and freed from naphthalene by scrubbing the gas with an ethylene glycol, e.g. tri-ethylene glycol. The used scrubbing liquid may be regenerated by extracting the naphthalene with a suitable solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, but preferably xylene, and distilling off the water. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a scrubber 1, reservoirs 5 and 6, receiving tanks 7 and 8 and a distillation column 9. The scrubber is supplied with regenerated washing liquid through line 13 and cooler 14 and is subdivided into a number of sections each supplied with a pump e for recirculating washing liquid within the section through a cooler f. Used washing liquid is withdrawn from the base of the scrubber by line 4 and mixed with a solvent from section 7a of the tank 7 in the vessel 5. The mixture of washing liquid and solvent is allowed to separate in tank 6 and an upper layer containing solvent and naphthalene is passed to section 7c of the tank 7 while the lower layer comprising washing liquid and water passes to compartment 7b. Washing liquid withdrawn from compartment 7b is heated in a heat-exchanger 8 and freed from water in the distillation column 9 and returned to the scrubber 1 via the heat-exchanger 8 and a cooler 14. Solvent collecting in compartment 7c is periodically withdrawn and distilled to provide fresh solvent for compartments 7a.
