Abstract

The invention comprises salts of glycyrrhetinic acid with organic bases such as N-methyl-glucamine, piperazine and triethanolamine, and their preparation by known methods for the conversion of organic acids to their salts with organic bases. Specification 798,655, 799,415, and 843,134 also are referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations for the suppression of inflammation comprise one or more salts of glycyrrhetinic acid with organic bases, alone or in admixture with one or more antibiotics, keratoplastics, keratolytics, analgesics, bacteriocides, chemotherapeutics, bacteriostatics, corticosteriods, xanthoglabrol, anti-histaminics, sedatives, fungicides, and/or insecticides, and an inert pharmaceutical carrier. The compounds may be incorporated into ointments, solutions, injections, emulsions, suspensions, pastes, cones, cerates, paints, powders, implants, lotions, suppositories and pessaries. They may be adapted for oral, sub-cutaneous, intramammary, intra-muscular, intra-articular, intra-peutoneal and intra-venous use. In examples, the piperazine, N-methylglucamine or triethanolamine salt of glycyrrhetinic acid is embodied in an ointment comprising neomycin sulphate or cetrimide and a petrolatum or emulsifying wax/liquid paraffin base; a lotion comprising hexachlorophene, glycerol, plyethylene glycol and "lanbritol" (Registered Trade Mark) in water; a lotion containing hydrocortisone alcohol, coal tar fractions and polyethyl glycol in water; a suppository containing benzocaine and 2:4 or 4:4-(diacetoxydiphenyl-methyl) pyridine in a suppository base and an injection containing methyl p-hydroxybenzoate a wetting agent and an edible cellulose derivative in normal saline.
