Abstract

<PICT:0842758/IV(a)/1> An apparatus for feeding particles of fusible polymers to a melting grid comprises a movably arranged down pipe for the supply of the polymers to the grid and a mechanism for moving the inner surface of the down pipe relative to its axis, this mechanism comprising a motor which imparts a reciprocating movement to the down pipe. The mechanism may be an axial vibrator and may be capable of producing a pulsating reciprocating movement parallel to the axis of the down pipe, and also of moving the down pipe in a tangential as well as an axial direction. By a pulsating reciprocating movement is meant a reciprocating motion such that the duration of movement in one direction is unequal to the duration of moved ment in the other direction. The surface area of the inner wall of the down pipe may be enlarge-with regard to its capacity, preferably by fitting one or more substantially vertical baffles in the down pipe, and/or by providing the inner surface of the down pipe with rills or grooves. As shown, the down pipe 17 comprises an outer mantle 19 and a movable inner mantle 20 connected to the actuating mechanism and widening in downward direction, its bottom rim 22 meeting the fixed cylindrical outer mantle 19 just above the melting grid 1. A vertical baffle 48 may be fitted. The actuating mechanism comprises a brace 26, pivotable around a horizontal axis, embracing the down pipe and supporting its inner wall 20 by means of tenons 23, and a pneumatic lifting mechanism for the brace comprising a pneumatic motor 32 operated through a three-way valve 36, a switch arm 38 moving in a vertical plane, and a switch rod 42 connected to the brace by means of a load arm 29 and provided with abutments 43, 44 at both sides of the switch arm, which abutments, in the highest or lowest position of the brace, operate the valve 36 through the switch arm. Inert gas may be supplied through the hose connection 5.
