Abstract
Water soluble aminotriazine modified polyacetals are prepared by reacting (a) the acid catalysed reaction product of at least one polyalkylene glycol having 2-4 carbon atoms in a straight chain and at least one aldehyde which in monomeric form contains 1-8 carbon atoms, and (b) at least one aminotriazine, the molar ratio of aldehyde to polyalkylene glycol being within the range 0,5-2,0 to 1 and of polyalkylene glycol to aminotriazine 4,5-15 to 1. The product may be modified with a polyhydric alcohol containing from 3-10 carbon atoms and from 3-6 hydroxyl groups. As polyalkylene glycols may be used diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, the dibutylene glycols, tripropylene glycol, di-trimethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycols of molecular weight of approximately 400, 600, 1000, 1500 and 4000. Aldehydes which may be used are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, crotonaldehyde, valeraldehyde, hexaldehyde, heptaldehyde, 2-ethylhexaldehyde or their polymers or simple acetals, chloroacetaldehyde, hydroxypivaldehyde, furfural, methyl and ethyl furfural, benzaldehyde, tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, glyoxal, malonaldehyde, succinaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, adipaldehyde, and terephthaldehyde. In addition their precursors such as dialkoxy tetrachydrofuranes and alkoxydihydropyranes may be used. Acid catalysts used are zinc, stannic and aluminium chlorides, oxalic acid, diglycolic and, phosphoric acid, and p-toluenesulphonic acid. The aminotriazines used are melamine, acetoguanamine, and benzoguanamine and as modifying alcohols glycerine, p pentaerythritol, dipentaerythirtol, sorbitol, mannitol and erythritol may be used. The products may be used in conjunction with curing catalysts such as diammonium phosphate, ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium chloride, amine salts, magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, zinc nitrate, and lactic, tartaric, and citric acids, and if desired in admixture with vinyl resins, polyvinyl alcohol, starches and modified starches, for treating cellulosic textile fabrics.ALSO:Compositions for treating cellulosic textiles comprise a water-soluble amino-triazine modified polyacetal prepared by reacting (a) the acid catalysed reaction product of at least one polyalkylene glycol having 2-4 carbon atoms in a straight chain and at least one aldehyde which in monomeric form contains 1-8 carbon atoms, and (b) at least one aminotriazine, the molar ratio of aldehyde to polyalkylene glycol being within the range 0,5-2,0 to 1 and of polyalkylene glycol to aminotriazine 4,5-15 to 1. The products may be modified with a polyhydric alcohol containing from 3-10 carbon atoms and from 3-6 hydroxyl groups. For treating the textile material the polyacetals are used in conjunction with curing catalysts such as diammonium phosphate, ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium chloride, amine salts, magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, zinc nitrate, and lactic, tartaric, and citric acids. They may also be used in admixture with vinyl resins, polyvinylalcohol, starches and modified starches, and have the advantage that they cause little loss of tensile strength of the fabric and cause practically no chlorine retention after bleaching with chlorine containing bleaches. Examples are given for the finishing of cotton fabrics and the treated products show good dimensional control and crease recovery.
