Abstract

842,123. Aerating liquids. FONDAZIONE EMANUELE PATERNO, and PALADINO, S. July 30, 1957, No. 24172/57. Class 14(1). Relates to a process and apparatus for diffusing oxygen into a liquid, such as a culture medium, which might be adversely affected by undue agitation. A gas is introduced into liquid contained in a vessel 1 through a number of diffusers 16. The vessel is jacketed at 2 for temperature control and sterilisation and a vertical baffle 21, welded to the top and sides of the vessel, forms separate compartments for each diffuser. The diffusers are situated just above the bottom of each compartment, in which are arranged an array 9 and 10 of disc and annular foraminous baffles., Gas outlets 7 and 11 connect the top of each compartment with a slide valve 15 which opens and closes them in turn. The liquid only fills half the tank and the pressure build-up in each compartment in turn, due to the action of the valve 15, causes it to oscillate between the levels 19 and 20. Mechanical agitation may be provided in addition.
