Abstract

841,995. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. Jan. 31, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1955], No. 31098/55. Class 135. A double-acting hydraulically-operated servomechanism comprises a rotary master element 1 working in a cylindrical bore 3 of a slave element 4, which slave element is movable axially within a cylindrical housing 5, the master element being provided with a continuous land 9 contacting the bore of the slave element and having at least one helical portion designed to block a flow port 13 provided in the wall of the slave element so that rotation of the master element, e.g. by a torque motor 2, in one or the other sense to uncover this port will cause differential hydraulic pressure to be applied to opposed ends of the slave element to effect translatory movement thereof in a corresponding sense until the port is again closed by the helical portion of the land. Hydraulic pressure is applied to the left-hand side of the slave element, which is of smaller area than the righthand side, through a supply port 6 which communicates through a port 8 with a space on the left-hand side of the land 9, the other side of the land being open to an exhaust port 7. Port 13 communicates with the right-hand side of the slave element through a passage 14, so that uncovering of this port in one or the other direction by rotation of the land 9 will alternately supply pressure liquid to, or exhaust it from, the right-hand side of the slave element to cause the corresponding translatory movements beforementioned.
