Abstract

A control layer separating the two conductors of an electric heater cable (see Group XXXVI) consists of a material of high negative coefficient of thermal impedance incorporating 0,04-5% by weight of a surface-active agent having a negative change of impedance per 55 DEG C. in excess of 45% and a d.c. resistance at 27 DEG C. no greater than three times that of stearyldimethyl benzylammonium chloride. Stearyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is the preferred surface-active agent but cetyl-dimethylethyl ammonium bromide, alkyl imidazolinium, di-isobutyl phenoxyethoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, the sodium and ammonium salts of the sulphate ester of alkylphenoxy polyethanol, sodium hexadecyl sulphate, diethanol amine, alkamidopolyethylene glycol, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, n-octadecyl disodium sulphosuccinate are also suitable. The material of high negative coefficient of thermal impedance is preferably polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of acylonitrile and an acrylic acid ester but other materials referred to are: vinyl halides, polyamides (nylon), polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyisocyanates (polyurethanes), styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, styreneacrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers, polyesters e.g. polyethyleneglycol terephthalate, neoprene, butyl rubber, natural rubber.
