Abstract

841,571. Controlled non-linear inductors. NIPPON TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE PUBLIC CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1956, No. 27211/56. Class 40 (9). An A.C. signal of frequency f, the relative phase 0 or # of which represents a binary value, is gated by a core M, Fig. 1, which is normally biased to saturation by a D.C. voltage E, the core having signal input and output windings 1, 3 and a control winding 4 energized at a frequency 2f by an oscillator Os. Normally the degree of core saturation by E is such that the input signal f is decoupled from the output winding 3, but when a coincidence controlling frequency 2f is applied to winding 4 having maximum values corresponding in time position to those of the signal f, the core is partially desaturated by the flux peaks and produces an output waveform of the fundamental frequency, the phase of the output corresponding to that of the input signal. This wave may be converted into sinusoidal form by a filter, a resonance circuit tuned to frequency f or a parametrically-excited resonator. It is stated that the controlling frequency may be other even multiples of frequency f, such as 4f, 6f, 8f, or ¢f, “f, 1/6f, and that saturable barium titanate capacitors may alternatively be used. An arrangement is described, Fig. 4, in which cores M1, M2 biased by windings 41, 42, have their output windings 31, 32 connected to a parametrically-excited resonator P3. The input windings 1 1 , 1 2 are associated with parametrically-excited resonators P1, P2 having an output frequency of f and respective phases differing by 180 degrees, and a signal from one resonator or the other is coupled by a core to P3 according to the oscillation phase 0 or # of a resonator P0 which produces an output frequency 2f in response to a signal s. The core selection is determined by the interaction of this frequency 2f in windings 2 1 , 2 2 with an output from a resonator PO<SP>1</SP> which is applied to windings 2 1 <SP>1</SP>, 2 2 <SP>1</SP> and has the same frequency and a constant predetermined phase relationship.
