841,458. Release mechanism for ironing machines. IRONRITE Inc. Sept. 8, 1958, No. 28796/58. Class 138 (2). An emergency release mechanism for an ironing machine of the type in which a tubular shaft supports a roll for movement towards and away from a fixed shoe, comprises a body coaxially mounted within the shaft and connected thereto by a locking means comprising a pin extending radially of the body and movable axially of the body to engage an annular spool which is connected to and is mounted within the shaft between the shaft and the body, the rotation of an actuator lever in the same direction as that of the roll away from the shoe rotating a ring member about the body so that in one position it holds the pin in engagement with the spool and in the other position it allows the pin to move out of engagement with the spool. As shown, Fig. 3, the tension of spring 31 created by the rotation of cam 28 is applied to roll 22 via body 33, which has a slot in which is diametrical pin 51, notch 39, spool 36, tube 17 and thence via arms 18 to the roll. The safety device is released by rotating arm 63 which rotates trigger ring 53, bringing notch 57 into line with notch 39 so that pin 51 moves into the former and releases the positive connection between spring 31 and the roll 22. To reset the device, arm 63 is rotated towards shoe 13 and when it makes contact with the extremity of its slot 62 in tube 17 it rotates tube 17, spool 36 and its notch 39 until the notch comes opposite pin 51. The pin is then driven into the notch by spring 19 and, notch 57 being freed of pin 51, trigger ring 53 returns to the position shown in Fig. 3 under the action of spring 72.
