Abstract

There are described yellow dyestuffs of the formula: <FORM:0841300/IV (c)/1> where X is an unsaturated aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic divalent radical and the benzene rings may be symmetrically substituted about X with non-ionogenic substituents or alternatively the terminal rings may each have a carboxylic or hydroxy group. The products are used in photographic elements (see Group XX). In general, the dyestuffs are prepared by coupling a diazotised amino benzene sulphonic acid with an amino benzene to produce a monoazo dyestuff which is acylated with an acid dichloride or dibasic acid anhydride. In the first group of examples the amino sulphonic acid or the methyl, dimethyl, methoxy, chloro or hydroxy carboxylic acid substituted amino sulphonic acid is diazotised and coupled with methyl, methoxy, methoxy-methyl, acetylamino or carbomethoxyamino amino benzene and the monoazo dyestuff thus obtained is reacted with benzene 1,3 or 1,4 dicarboxylic acid dichloride or benzene 2,5 dichloro 1,4 dicarboxylic acid dichloride. In a second group of examples, monoazo dyestuffs of the first group are reacted with a pyridine, thiophene furan or pyrrole dicarboxylic acid dichloride. In a third group of examples monoazo dyestuffs of the first group are reacted with fumaric or methyl, bromo or chloro fumaric or butadiene 1,4 dicarboxylic, maleic or methyl maleic acid dichloride. In a fourth group of examples the amino sulphonic acid or the methoxy ethoxy or hydroxy carboxylic acid substituted amino sulphonic acid is diazotised and coupled with methoxy-methyl or acetylamino amino benzene and the monoazo dyestuff thus obtained is reacted with benzene 1,4 or pyridine 1,5 dicarboxylic acid dichloride.
