Abstract
841,249. Moulding hollow concrete blocks. COLLENS, P. P. Aug. 29, 1956 [Sept. 2, 1955], No.25273/55. Class 87(2). A process of moulding hollow concrete blocks having a side wall not substantially greater than ¥ inch from a mixture of from (parts by volume) 6-4 aggregate to 1 of cement and from 35% to 50% of water based on the weight of the cement comprises placing the mixture into an expandable closed mould having hardened polished metal surfaces and at least one core having a hardened polished metal surface, the mould and core or cores forming cavities not greater than ¥ inch thickness and compressing the mixture under a pressure of not less than 1000 p.s.i. An apparatus, said to carry out the process, comprises a feed hopper 22 having a hollow lower end 21 forming the top of the mould arranged over a reciprocable ram 11 adapted to lift moulds 13, 14 off a track 29 on which they are movable, the ram having cores 20 which pass through the mould and enter the hollow lower end 21 of the hopper 22. The moulds are arranged on a carriage 28 which reciprocates between two unloading stations 39, one on either side of the machine where, say mould 13, is unloaded whilst a block is being moulded in mould 14. The unloaded blocks are removed on conveyers 44. Automatic feeding devices for the hopper 22 and automatic mould opening and closing devices are described.
