Abstract
840,515. Leaf-spring suspensions. TRUCK EQUIPMENT CO. Inc. Oct. 24, 1957, No. 33256/57. Class 108(2). A chassis 10, Fig. 2, is supported on axles 18, 22, of tandem wheels 17, 21 by a beam 24 which rests on ends 71 of rock arms 70 and contains leaf springs 60, 62, Fig. 3, by a support block 47 and a bracket 45. A similar beam 25, Fig. 1, is provided at the opposite side of the chassis. Two groups 60, 62, Fig. 3, of leaves are used in the spring and they are progressively compressed as the load increases, more groups could be used. A rubber bump stop 65 prevents undue rebound of the chassis member 10, to which it is connected by a member 39, with respect to the beam 24. Longitudinal spacing rods 100 act between the support block 47 and rubber blocks 108 supported by fixed transverse walls 81 and bolts 110. Heads 71 of rock arms 70 bear against the beam 24 through blocks 74, limited longitudinal movement with respect to the beam being permitted by rubber inserts 85, 86. Links 120, 121, Figs. 1, 2, pivoted at both ends about axes at right angles to their length, ensure a self-steering action, since when either axle 18 or 22 tends to move axially a turning movement is imparted to the axle, by virtue of the resilient mountings of the links, which tends to steer the axle back into line. Wear plates 140, 141, Fig. 1, limit lateral movement of the beams 24, 25. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which seat members 194, 195 for rubber cushions 203, 204 and bearing members 199, 200 for heads 191 of rock arms 190 are differently shaped. Also, a rubber block 212 is not bolted in position. In the unloaded condition the top leaf of stack 185 is arched upwardly to contact the lower leaf of upper stack 186 to prevent the leaves becoming unseated. Support means 44, 47, of Fig. 3, and 176, 177 of Fig. 8, may be located at any point between the ends of the longitudinal beams so that the weight may be distributed between the two axles in any preferred ratio.
