Abstract
840,505. Washing vehicles. DAWSON BROS., DAWSON, D., and DAWSON, G. May 12, 1958 [Feb. 12, 1957], No. 4700/57. Class 138(1). In a machine for washing vehicles of the kind in which an upright rotating brush 7 is placed at each side so that as a vehicle passes between them it is sprayed with liquid for washing the brushes 7, inclined from the vertical in planes substantially parallel to the sides, are swung about a pivotal axis bodily towards and away from the vehicle track. The machine comprises a pair of units, Fig. 1, each with a pivotal shaft 1, supported from a braced frame 2 on bearings 3 and rotatable within angular limits, with swinging arms 4 extending from it to support a revolving brush shaft 5, having suitable stocks 6 clamped or bolted along it filled with brush material 7 and driven by a motor 8 with a starter 13 and drive 9. Preferably each shaft 5 is so inclined that the brush top is nearer to the approaching vehicle than the bottom and the brush rotates in the opposite direction to the vehicle's travel. A compression spring 10 assists the return of the brush, oscillations being damped out by a shock absorbing arrangement 11, whilst each brush has splash guards 12.
