Abstract
840,290. Guard devices for pressure gauges. MANNING, MAXWELL & MOORE Inc. June 12, 1958 [June 21, 1957], No. 18805/58. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A guard device 11 for installation between a source of fluid at high temperature and pressure and an instrument 10 which responds to pressure variations comprises a diaphragm capsule 34 made from two thin corrugated resilient metal discs 37, 42 and a rigid bushing 17 having a central bore through which extends a capillary tube 12, the inner end of the bushing 17 being welded to the margin of a central aperture in the disc 37, the assembly being located within a chamber C in a housing 14, 15, all the joints between constituent elements of the guard device being welds. The discs 37, 42 are joined together by an air-tight weld 43 round the outer rim. A filler member 39 with a central bore 41 is provided to reduce the effective size of a chamber 32 formed in the end of the bushing 17. The method of making the guard device comprises the steps of inserting the capillary tube 12 in bushing 17, securing disc 37 to it, inserting filler member 39, assembling disc 42 to disc 37, corrugating the discs 37 and 42, placing a protecting tube T over the capillary tube 12, inserting bushing 17 into part 14 of the housing and assembling part 15 to part 14. The parts are welded together as they are assembled at 35, 36, 38, 43, 50, 18, 16 and the assembly is tested for air tightness after each weld.
