Abstract

840,229. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems; valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1957 [Sept. 20, 1956], No. 29617/57. Class 135. Servomotor system.-An engine throttle valve 14 in an induction pipe 16 is opened by a spring 19 and closed by suction behind the valve acting on a diaphragm 22 via pipes 26, 27, which latter is also connected to a pipe 28 by which air may be supplied to the diaphragm to prevent the suction from closing the valve 14. The pipe 28 is connected to a conduit 72 under the control of a vehicle-speed governor comprising a centrifugally actuated valve 46 transversely mounted in a shaft 37 rotated by a flexible drive 56 from the propeller shaft 61 of a vehicle in which the engine is installed. The conduit 72 opens into a chamber 29 that surrounds the valve 46 whilst pipe 28 is connected to the valve by an oblique passage 44 along the shaft 37. A second flexible drive 67 is taken from the shaft 37 to a speedometer 69. Air is supplied to conduit 72 from atmosphere by way of a pipe 87 and an engine-speed governor comprising an adjustable centrifugally actuated valve 82, similar to valve 46, disposed transversely in an engine driven shaft 74, such as the distributer shaft. Operation of either valve reduces the air flow to the diaphragm so causing the throttle valve 14 to move towards its closed position. Centrifugal valve.-The valve 46 comprises a pin 47 with a weight 48 on one end supported by a rubber sleeve and washer assembly 49; the other pin end is threaded to receive a nut 51 between which and the shaft 37 is a spring 52. The pin 47 embodies flutes 53 for controlling the air flow into passage 44.
