Abstract

A thickened lubricating oil composition comprises a lubricating oil base, predominantly consisting of a tertiary alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon oil having an average of 2-4 alkyl substituents per molecule, and a thickening agent. Lubricating oil bases mentioned are those derived either from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in which the rings form a fused ring system (e.g. naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, or acenaphthene) or from such hydrocarbons in which the rings do not form a fused ring system (e.g. diphenyl) or terphenyl). The thickeners specified are soaps (including complexes formed between fatty acid soaps and salts of aromatic acids such as benzoic acid), salts of sulphonic acids, carbon black, clays, inorganic colloids (e.g. silica, silica-magnesia or silica-alumina), estersils, and polynuclear aromatic compounds having a melting point above 200 DEG F. and chosen from indanthrene compounds, phthalocyanines, indogen compounds and anthraquinone dyes. Where inorganic materials are used as thickening agents, they may be waterproofed by the incorporation of surface-active agents, such as ammonia epichlorohydrin condensates (or the partial amides formed by the reaction of such condensates with fatty acids), polyalkylene polyamine/fatty acid reaction products, phenol/formaldehyde resins and aniline/formaldehyde resins. Where an estersil is used as the thickening agent, the addition of a low molecular weight amine (e.g. ethanolamine), an alcohol (e.g. ethanol) or a ketone (e.g. acetone), while blending the estersil with the base oil, increases the thickening power of the estersil. The composition may also comprise 1-25% by weight, based on the whole composition, of an essentially non-aromatic hydrocarbon oil consisting predominantly of isoparaffinic hydrocarbons. Such an oil may be prepared by the isomerization of paraffin wax or of mineral oil fractions containing paraffin wax. The thickened lubricating oil composition may be a lubricating grease, a bodied hydraulic fluid or a wax-like composition for use in protecting surfaces against corrosion or other external influences. In the examples, lubricating greases are described consisting of tertiary butylated naphthalene oil (having an average of 2 tertiary alkyl groups per molecule) thickened with indanthrene blue, estersil (silica aerogel surface-esterified with isobutyl alcohol), lithium stearate or hectorite clay (waterproofed with a tall oil acid partial amide of an ammonia/epichlorohydrin condensate).
