Abstract
840,061. Extruding. LIGHT METALS CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1958 [Jan. 14, 1957], No. 427/58. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for guiding a plurality of extruded products S along a run-out table 12, comprises a separate clamping means 32 for gripping each product, supported from a means 55 running along a track 50 and adapted to exert a pull on the product. A number of parallel extruded bars S are produced from a billet 6, Fig. 10, of aluminium, magnesium, or brass inserted in a container 4, heated by resistance elements, and extruded by a ram 5 through a die 7 having a plurality of orifices 8. The extruded bars pass through passages 11 in a canister 9, which may alternatively be omitted, and then through guide passages 21 in a funnel 23 which aligns the bars for gripping each by a separate clamping means 32, Fig. 1. A saw 13 is positioned on the run-out table for severing the extruded bars into lengths. A retractable support 200 is provided for the extruded bars adjacent the saw. The clamping means 32 are mounted on supports 31, 33, suspended by resilient mounting 70, Fig. 6 (not shown), from respective trolleys 55. Spring-loaded toggle mechanism 101 on each clamping means is broken by pressure on a trigger 100, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), when the bar enters the clamping means 32, for clamping the bar automatically; simultaneously a limit switch 160, Fig. 4 (not shown), is opened for starting the pulling movement of the respective trolley. In another embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), the extruded bars are clamped by a serrated cam surface 211 operated by a cable. The trolleys 55 are attached to separate nyloncoated self-lubricating cables 60 passing over pulleys 65, 66, 67. Pulleys 65 are driven in either direction by separate reversible air motors 110. Fig. 14 (not shown), supplied with compressed air through fluid-actuated valves controlled by solenoid-actuated pilot values. An electrical control system, Fig. 15 (not shown), is described. This includes a limit switch 80 actuated by the trolley, Fig. 6 (not shown), for stopping the trolleys at the end of their forward movements, and switches 80a, 80b, for stopping them on their return movements. Low-pressure air is used for effecting the forward movement of the trolleys and higher pressure air for effecting a quicker return movement. An air-released spring-actuated brake 150, Fig. 14 (not shown), stops the motors immediately the air supply thereto is stopped. During the return movement all the trolleys are caused to move together by abutting against a bar 250, Fig. 8 (not shown), carried by one of the trolleys which moves slightly slower than the others. The trolleys carry spacing members 37 which co-operate together and with guides 300 for aligning the clamping means 32 with the funnel openings 21 when the trolleys have returned to their positions adjacent the funnel. U.S.A. Specification 2,720,310 is referred to.
