Abstract

839,989. Xerographic processes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1956, No. 27123/56. Class 98(2) [Also in Group XVI] A xerographic toner image on a record sheet is fixed by charging the toner particles to one polarity and then contacting them with toner solvent vapour particles charged to the opposite polarity. The record sheet may be cooled at the same time as it is exposed to the solvent vapour. The toner solvent may be CCl 3 F or CCl 2 FCClF 2 . Fig. 2 shows the fixing apparatus used in conjunction with a cylindrical xerographic printer. The image is developed on the xerographic drum (not shown) and is transferred to a paper web 26 by a roller 22. The toner image 33 is then given a negative charge at 34 by means of a corona discharge. The paper not covered by toner will also receive a charge but this will be rapidly discharged by earthed roller 36 and/or earthed plate 44. The primary function of plate 44 however, is to cool the paper sheet and to this end, coolant is circulated through conduit in the said plate which may be of copper. Toner solvent is vaporized in tank 38 by means of heater 39 and the vapour is sprayed through a nozzle 42 into chamber 41 wherein it comes into contact with the cooled paper web. The vapour is positively charged by means of wires or grids 43 or by spraying it from a positively charged gun through an earthed metal ring. Any excess solvent is removed from the paper by passing it over a heated block 47 and extracting the vapour from hood 48 by a blower 49. The air from the blower is passed round cooling coils 52 and the condensed vapour collected in 53. Specifications 766,426, 768,020 and 819,481 are referred to.
