Abstract
Polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and not more than 70% propylene, and optionally another unsaturated hydrocarbon, are stabilized and cross-linked by heating the polymer in the presence of carbon black and an organic peroxide of the formula <FORM:0838964/IV (a)/1> where R1 is an aryl radical, R2, R3, R4 and R5 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of up to 4 carbon atoms, and R6 is hydrogen, an aryl radical, or an alkyl radical of less than 4 carbon atoms. The Specification contains an extensive list of peroxides in accordance with the above formula. The carbon black may be furnace or channel black. The third hydrocarbon of the copolymer may be butadiene, isoprene, dipentene, or alloocimene. The polymers may be made by high or low pressure techniques.
