Abstract

A tubular film is made by extrusion of an at least partially crystalline polypropylene. Polypropylene of molecular weight above 50,000 and of over 50% by weight crystalline content may be extruded at from 50-100 DEG C. above the softening point of the material, e.g. at about 250 DEG C. Cooling after extrusion may be effected in air, or in a bath of liquid at about 20 DEG C., and the tubular film is preferably led into the bath while the polypropylene is at a temperature such that it is still soft. The bath may contain a sizing or other modifying agent, e.g. an antistatic agent. In the preferred embodiment, polypropylene is extruded through an annular die and expanded by gaseous pressure, and then cooled in a liquid bath which acts as a seal to maintain the gaseous pressure in the tube, which may then be slit and collected as a nontubular film. The end of a portion of tubular film may be heat-sealed to form a bag.
