838,682. Powder metallurgy. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 13, 1958 [Sept. 25, 1957], No. 25988/58. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] Composite spark plug electrodes are made by compacting two or more layers of different powdered metals, sintering at a temperature below the melting point of the lowest melting point metal of the compact and then extruding the sintered compact transversely of the layers to form an electrode with a core of one metal and a sheath of another. A heat and corrosion resistant metal such as Ni, Pt or Fe forms the sheath while a metal with a high heat conductivity such as Cu or Ag forms the core. Two layers of 100 mesh Cu powder and 100 mesh Ni powder 6, 10 (Fig. 2) are simultaneously compacted at 100,000 p.s.i. and the compact sintered at 1850‹F for one hour under hydrogen. The compact is re-pressed at 150,000 p.s.i. annealed at 1850‹F for two hours in hydrogen and finally extruded with the Ni layer adjacent the extrusion orifice to form a rod shaped composite article with a Cu core 26 and a Ni sheath 28 and Ni tip 36 (Fig. 8). The composite rod is then shaped by conventional forming and cutting operations to form a spark plug centre electrode. By varying the shape of the interface of the powder layers of the "green compact" by compacting the first powder layer with a shaped top punch the thickness of the bottom or top and sides of the extruded metal sheath may be varied (Figs. 11-18 not shown). The composite "green compact" may also be produced by pressing the metal layers separately and finally pressing them together. A three layer composite electrode having a Cu core, an Fe sheath and a Ni tin can also be made by this process.
