A peripheral mould, for bending and tempering glass sheets, having at least one rail-like moulding member disposed edgewise to provide a shaping surface, is reinforced by a set of bracing members of small thickness relative to their width and are inter-connected edgewise between opposed portions of the rail-like moulding member or members so as to minimise obstruction to the flow of tempering fluid. As shown, a mould for a lay rear window has a fixed mould member 10 and movable member 12 pivoted thereto by metal straps 28 on pivot rods 32 ending in the usual connterweights 30 and prevented from excessive rotation by stops 34. Bracing members 50 of about half the width of the rails 14, 16 are secured at one end 51 to the lower half of such rails and at the other end 54 to a further bracing member 50 to give a louvred effect which assists in controlling the heating of particular parts of the mould. Holes 20 in the rails also assist in keeping the tempering fluid, normally air, in circulation under the bent glass sheet. The unbent sheet is initially positioned by members 40, 42, 44 and rests on an edge support 46 attached outboard of the end rail portion 26 of member 12.
