Abstract

837,553. Aircraft. SOC. NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES DU NORD. June 1, 1956 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 16959/56. Class 4. A supersonic aircraft comprises a forward elevator unit, the distance between the aerodynamic centre of the wing and that of the unit being at least twice the mean chord of the wing, the unit comprising two symmetrical structures disposed one on each side of the fuselage, part or the whole of each structure being movable about a spanwise axis by a control device, and two wing-tip ailerons movable about a second spanwise axis for control in roll and also for control in pitch. In Fig. 1, the wings 2 have their tips 24 rotatable about axes X-X and separated from the main part of the wings by fences 25. The forward elevators 6 are bodily movable about pins 8, or the rear portion only may be deflectable. The pilot's control column 12 is pivoted for fore-and-aft movement, and controls the elevators through links 15 and 18, a servomotor 20, and links 21, 23, and 10. The trailing edge of the elevators may be provided with a blowing slot for boundary layer control. A hand lever 26 is mounted on the control column 12 for lateral movement and rotates a shaft 40 through links 28-31 and 34-39. A member 41 is rigidly attached to shaft 40, and is connected to each aileron through links 43 and 48-55, and a servomotor 56, the latter being mounted within the fence 25. Each link 43 is also connected by a link 44 to a member 45 reciprocable with respect to member 41 by a screw jack 47. Rotation of shaft 40 moves surfaces 24 equally in opposite directions for roll control, and operation of jack 47 moves surfaces 24 equally in the same direction, to supplement the pitch control of elevators 6. In a modification of the fences 25, the part of each above the wing is formed as a swept back triangular fin. High lift flaps 60 are fitted, which may be slotted or have boundary layer control. Alternatively, the boundary layer of a truncated wing may be controlled by blowing through a slot at the trailing edge.
