Abstract

The invention comprises copper-containing dyes which in their metal-free state are of formula <FORM:0837124/IV(c)/1> where A is free from SO3H but may be otherwise substituted, X is a metallizable substitutent, B is a naphthalene nucleus containing one SO3H group and OH in o-position to the azo group, R is H or alkyl and Y is Hlg. They are made by conventional processes by coppering the dye obtained by treating the compound <FORM:0837124/IV(c)/2> with at least an equimolar quantity of a cyanuric halide. 1,1-Complexes are obtained. Preferably the metal-free dye is obtained in an aqueous medium at pH 6-7 and the product isolated from the medium adjusted to pH 6.5. Indicated as substituents for A are halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylsulphonyl, alkylcarbonyl, acylamino nitro, carboxyl and especially sulphamyl groups the latter of which may be substituted. Indicated for X are OH, MeO, COOH or OCH2COOH. R preferably has 4 or less C atoms. Specified coupling components include 2-amino-8-naphthol - 7 -, 2 - ethylamino - 5 - naphthol - 7 - and 1 - amino - 8 - naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acids, Specified diazo components include 2-aminophenol, 4 - chloro - and - nitro - 2 - aminophenol, anthranilic acid, 4 - ethanesulphonyland - sulphamyl - 2 - aminophenol, 3 - amino4 - hydroxyacetophenone, 5 - nitro - 2 - aminophenoxyacetic acid, o - anisidine, 4 - diethylsulphamyl - 2 - aminoanisole and 2 - aminoiso-phthalic acid. The dyes as alkali metal salts, are especially useful for dyeing and printing cellulose textiles in conjunction with an acidbinding agent (see Specification 797,946), orange, red and blue shades being obtained.
