Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic amino compounds to produce the corresponding alicyclic amino compounds, by continuously passing an aromatic amino compound in which a substituted or unsubstituted amino group is directly attached to one carbon atom of one ring in a benzene, diphenyl or diphenylene group, which may have one or more further non-aromatic substituents not affected by the hydrogenation process, into a reaction zone wherein it is reacted with hydrogen at a temperature of from 200-260 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure and in the presence of a ruthenium hydrogenation catalyst, and continuously removing the desired alicyclic amino compound from the effluent from the reaction zone. Starting materials specified are aniline, N-methylaniline, N-dimethylaniline, benzidine, toluidines, diphenylamines, triphenylamine and phenylene diamine. Preferably a minor proportion of a hydrogenated aromatic amine present in the equilibrium mixture is also present in the starting material, e.g. in the hydrogenation of aniline 20% by volume of dicyclohexylamine is preferably present in the starting material. The starting material may be preheated within the reaction zone before being contacted with the hydrogen. The ruthenium catalyst may be supported on, e.g., activated alumina pellets, charcoal, or kieselguhr, and may be in the elementary form, or as ruthenium oxide or dioxide, or as a salt of ruthenium in which the ruthenium is in either the anion or cation thereof. Examples are given.
