Abstract

836,697. Firearms. WOODCOCK, F. H. June 18, 1956 [June 25, 1955], No 18432/55. Class 119 In a smallarm of the kind in which the barrel and mechanism are mounted in a stock, a vibration damping device is interposed between the barrel 11 and the fore-' end 12 of the stock. The damping device comprises a liquid layer, such as of heavy oil, contained in a thin walled cylinder 15 of steel, aluminium, or the like, coaxial with the barrel 11 and extending at least over the length where the barrel would otherwise be in contact with the fore-end 12. The ends 15a and 15b of the cylinder 15 are thickened so that their inner diameters have a small dimensional clearance with the barrel 11 and are grooved internally to carry resilient sealing rings 21 and 18. The sealing rings 21 and 18 fit tightly around the barrel 11 to support and locate the cylinder 15 and to seal its contents. A nut 22 and washer 23 can be clamped against the ring 21 to lock the cylinder in position. The fore-end is attached to the barrel by a securing bolt 30 which is screwed into a boss 28 on the cylinder 15 or, alternatively, by one or more external metal straps, packed with felt, as in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
