Abstract

835,882. Controlling gas burners. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. May 14,1956, No. 14958/56. Class 75(1) In a burner control system in which the operation of a first valve 11 connects the pilot burner 17 and the inlet side of a second valve 15 to the main supply 10, the second valve 15 is operated through a thermally operated flame sensing switch 46 associated with the pilot burner 17, when the switch is in its "hot" position, to connect the main burner 16 to the main supply 10 only after a switching operation has been performed through the switch 46 in its cold position. As shown, applied to an automatic clothes drier at starting up and with the main switch 25 closed, and the flame sensing switch 46 in its cold position 45, relays 55, 56 are pulled up over back contacts 59 and pressure limit switches 63, 64 and line 43, switch 46 and line 44, a holding circuit being then provided over front contact 60 and lines 70, 74. The coil 12 of valve 11 is energized over contacts 40 of a thermal time switch 41 e.g. a bimetallic strip 40 asociated with a heater 41, arranged to open if the switch 46 does not move to its hot position with a predetermined time, and lines 47, 44 and the valve 11 is opened to feed the pilot burner which is lighted by a filament lighter 19 within said predetermined time. The switch 46, having changed over to its hot position 50, completes a circuit for the solenoid coil 21 of the valve 15 over front contact 54 through an adjustable thermostat 36 and a safety thermostat 37, switches 31, 32 operated by a timer motor 27 and a drier door operated switch 29, so that the main valve can only be opened when the drier door is closed and switches 31, 32 made. Motor 26 drives the drier drum, motor 27 turns the gas supply off and on at predetermined time intervals. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the valve 11 is opened by a circuit over the switch 46 in its cold position and completes a holding circuit for itself independent of switch 46 so that both valves 11, 15 can be re-energized and opened on de-energization only after a return of the switch 46 to the cold position. Specification 765,941 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 765,942.
