835,815. Treating asphalt. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 13, 1957], No. 28959/57. Class 22. [Also in Group XII] Gas mixtures containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide are obtained by the partial combustion under super-atmospheric pressure of asphalt with oxygen, or with gases such as air preferably containing about 50% oxygen, with the addition of steam in a process in which the asphalt and oxygen are injected into a reaction chamber through a throat in one end wall, the end wall in the vicinity of the throat being cooled by a cooling medium which consists of at least part of the steam to be supplied to the reaction chamber, this steam being introduced into the reaction chamber in such a way as to screen the chamber walls in the vicinity of the throat. As shown, oxygen is supplied tangentially through line 5 to whirl chamber 2 and thence together with asphalt supplied by line 4 which terminates in a pressure atomizer into reaction chamber 1 through throat 3. Steam is supplied at least partly through channel 8 and enters chamber 1 at such an angle as to screen the walls from attack by the other reactants. The steam is generally supplied to the cooling zone at a pressure at least 0À5 atmospheres above that at which the other reactants are supplied. The openings 7 through which the steam enters the chamber may either be a single annular opening or a series of discrete openings. If less steam is required for the reaction than is supplied by these openings into the chamber, some of the channels through which coolant flows around the throat 3 are then directed through an outlet not opening into the chamber ; if more steam is required, the excess needed may be introduced into the oxygen-containing gas streams before the stream enters whirl-chamber 2.
