Abstract

A composition for use as a laminate adhesive (see Group VIII), but useful also for coating, consists of microcrystalline petroleum wax and 1 to 10% of a glycol ester of hydrogenated rosin acid. The microcrystalline waxes generally have melting points in the range 130 DEG to 190 DEG F. and fall into two grades: (i) laminating microwax having an oil content above 4% and an A.S.T.M. penetration of 25 DEG to 35/77 DEG F., and (ii) coating microwax having an oil contact below 4% and an A.S.T.M. penetration of 10-22/77 DEG F. Both grades may be used in the laminating wax compositions of the invention. Esters mentioned are those of ethylene, diethylene and propylene glycols. Examples compare the laminating strength (see Group XIX) of an unmodified laminating wax and compositions comprising a coating microwax and 5% each of polyethylene, petroleum resin, and the ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and glyceryl esters of hydrogenated rosin acid.ALSO:An adhesive for use in the manufacture of laminated paper, paper-board and metal foil comprises microcrystalline petroleum wax and 1 to 10 % by weight of a glycol ester of hydrogenated rosin acid. Specified esters are those of ethylene, diethylene and propylene glycol. The laminating strengths of adhesives according to the invention and other adhesives comprising microwax and polyethylene or a petroleum resin or a glyceryl ester of hydrogenated rosin acid, are compared in an example.
