Abstract

The degradation of colloidal aqueous solutions of galactomannans at elevated temperatures and at a pH above about 5.5, is retarded by adding to such solutions a salt selected from water-soluble metal sulphites, thiosulphates and arsenites. Examples of suitable salts include sodium sulphite, zinc sulphite, sodium thiosulphate and sodium arsenite. In some instances it is necessary to add sodium chloride to render the selected salt effective or to increase its effectiveness. Other salts which provide an additive effect, although useless alone, are disodium phosphate, trisodium phosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The galactomannans used include guar gum, locust bean gum and tara gum. The minimum concentrations of the salts which are required to provide stability are 5% for sodium thiosulphate, 2.5% for sodium sulphite and 10% for zinc sulphite.
