Abstract

833,600. Pneumatic collectors. COLEMAN ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Nov. 4, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1957], No. 34308/57. Class 107 Loose objects and dirt are cleared from airfields by a vacuum cleaning vehicle in which air is circulated at a high velocity from a blower to the underside of the front of the machine, and is drawn into a suction pipe at a point nearer to the rear of the machine entraining dirt and debris, this entrainment being assisted by a projection from the underside of the machine which almost touches the ground and which serves to deflect heavier objects into the air stream. As shown, the vacuum cleaner assembly C, pivoted to the chassis 20 of the vehicle at 46 and supported partly by the hydraulic cylinders 55 and partly by castors 52, has a blower 40 connected to ducts 35 and 36, which extend across the width of the machine, and a pair of suction ducts 34 which lead to a pair of separators 30 and associated hoppers 38. The intake of air to the system is regulated by an adjustable flap 74 fitted to the underside of duct 36, and flexible curtains 82, 66, 65, and 95 enclose the treatment zone. Spring-loaded blades 102 and 100 deflect material into the appropriate branches of suction duct 34 and the airstream carrying such material passes into the pair of separators 30, which have freely mounted circular filters rotated by the airstream, and the debris falls into hopper 38 whilst the cleaned air is recirculated. The vacuum cleaner assembly may be -raised clear of the ground by hydraulic cylinders 55 for driving the vehicle along the road.
